Gourd Ornaments
These gourd ornaments are made using primarily "hard-shelled" ornamental gourds, most of which have been grown right here on the farm.
Hard-shelled gourds are very hardy. This means that if you drop one, more than likely it is simply going to hit the floor and go shooting off to be a great toy for your cat (or dog . . . or children . . .) for a few minutes (the voice of experience . . . in a household of 6 cats, the gourds are regularly "quality tested" by the furry members of the family when they can get their paws on them). As such, they make wonderful gifts for children and adults alike and have the potential for being handed down from generation to generation as heirloom ornaments. Plus, there is the added "perk" of them making wonderful sounds as their seeds rattle around when shaken.
Every gourd is different and unique, each having it's own naturally occurring shape and markings, etc. Sometimes it is the shape of the gourd that determines what I will be sketching onto it, sometimes there are markings on it that either spark an idea or are a great addition to a design. In any case, each and every gourd that leaves Gryphon's Keep Farm has been individually sketched, wood-burned and colored using a broad variety of techniques. I use no set patterns and each ornament is an individual.
Take a look through the following samples of some of my work. If you see something that sparks your interest, feel free to get in touch. I am happy to keep things simple and design an ornament for you based on one that you see herein and, likewise, I love to put special touches onto ornaments that make them truly special to those people receiving them. Some examples: 1) A woman ordered a Santa ornament for a close friend who absolutely loved ladybugs. So I put a little line of ladybugs climbing up the white part of Santa's hat. At a distance it looked like a pattern. Up close, it was easy to see what they were and the ornament was a great success with the friend. 2) A woman ordered an ornament for a dear friend of her daughter who loved the sea. So we decided on a design of a mermaid (resembling the friend) riding on a dolphin with a quote of the girl's favorite ocean poem rolling across the waves. These are just a couple of examples of how ornaments can be made into something completely unique to the individual receiving them.
Enjoy your visit and please get in touch if you have any questions or would like to discuss ordering an ornament. I can be reaced via email at [email protected] and by phone at (434)665-4261.
